How to save 3% on all Grab and Gojek rides overseas (Outside of Singapore)
The SEA countries are slowly reopening for the tourists. You were able to stash a lot of $$$ during these past two years, but why not saving an additional 3% on all your Grab and Gojek rides ?
Not a fancy post, not a scam, no fishing either
Just feeling the need to share with you how to save 3% on all your Grab and Gojek overseas rides, when using your credit/debit card as payment method.
Using a Credit/Debit Card from a local SG bank as payment method for Grab/Gojek overseas will cost you 3% additional fees
Yes, regardless of your bank (DBS, OCBC, UOB, Maybank, CIMB, StanChart, Bank of Singapore, POSB, etc.), you are charged 3% of FX fees by your bank, when using Grab/Gojek overseas, if you’re using your debit/credit card to pay the driver.
This has always been the case, no breaking news here.
For Personal Reason
If you’ve been travelling like crazy before COVID, for personal reason, you may have wasted a lot of money without even noticing it. You made yourself 3% poorer on each transaction. At the same time, you have made your bank wealthier. 3% richer per transaction, to be precise.
But also for work
The above is also valid for professional reason. Over the past 8 years, I kept travelling to Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines and Thailand, meeting customers, partners and prospects.
I can tell you the pain it is to claim all the taxi rides, one by one, when the local currency is not SGD:
You got to show the original ride invoice (in the local currency)
Then you get to attached your bank e-statement for each and every ride, and must map it correctly, in order to claim the respective amount in SGD
In conclusion:
A waste of time for you
And an unnecessary waste of money for your company!
The answer
While Revolut is not new at all, a little “revolution” took place over Grab and Gojek, few weeks ago: it is now possible to link your Revolut card to both apps!
Yes, that may sound crazy, but it still wasn’t possible to link the Revolut Debit card to Grab and Gojek, few months ago.
Concretely, what does it mean?
On a personal standpoint:
You will be able to save 3% on all rides overseas, since Revolut’s philosophy is to not charge any FX fees.
On a professional note:
You will save a lot of time, as you won’t need to claim all your rides in SGD anymore, since the amount you’re charged by Revolut, is the same regardless of the currency
You will help your company to save cost on all your business trips
